World Heart Day 2015: Joining forces to fight the #1 cause of death worldwide

September 29, 2015 – An estimated 17.3 million people die of cardiovascular diseases every year. That makes it the number one cause of death in the world today, with 80% of those deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Ischemic heart disease (e.g. heart attacks) is responsible for 7.3 million of total CVD deaths and cerebrovascular disease (e.g. strokes) for a further 6.2 million.

The big causes of cardiovascular disease
The majority of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is caused by risk factors that can be controlled, treated or modified, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, being overweight or obese, tobacco use, lack of physical activity and diabetes. In terms of attributable deaths, the leading CVD risk factor is raised blood pressure (13% of global deaths), followed by tobacco use (9%), raised blood glucose (6%), physical inactivity (6%) and being overweight or obese (5%).

How Sandoz supports the fight against CVD
Novartis and Sandoz are committed to playing a key role in the global battle against CVD. The portfolio will be offered to governments, non-governmental organizations and other public-sector healthcare providers for USD 1 per treatment, per month.

Sandoz plays a critical role in the program as the majority of the portfolio’s medicines are Sandoz treatments The products included in the Novartis Access product portfolio have been selected based on the World Health Organization's Essential Medicines List and are among the most commonly prescribed medicines in these countries.
